NYFW Trendspotting: Burgundy

22 Feb

For those of us a bit too accident-prone to embrace Fall’s white trend, enter the perfect opposite: burgundy. The deep, rich hue is elegant, a beautiful neutral base similar to black, and even better, flattering on most-to-all skin tones. Extra benefit, burgundy looks amazing with black, navy, gray, white pretty much all bases and can color block beautifully with emerald green, cobalt blue, rich purples or any jewel tones.

J. Mendel, Elizabeth and James, Christian Siriano, and Helmut Lang.

Look for sleek silhouette, tailored pieces like the gorgeous Elizabeth and James blazer and cropped pant combo. That will be my burgundy must have for Fall.

DKNY, Jason Wu, Peter Som, and Rodarte.

Rag and Bone, Yigal Azrouel, Tory Burch and Ralph Lauren

The complimentary hue will transition perfectly with your existing wardrobe, a little bit more practical than that technicolor Simpson-trend we saw at Jeremy Scott.

Right before I left for my eight week winter escape in LA, I just purchased the most gorgeous burgundy shawl wrap coat from Elie Tahari and was crushed that Southern CA’s temps wouldn’t allow me to wear it. But lucky me, it’s the “it” shade for Fall!

NYFW Trendspotting: White

21 Feb

Winter white. It’s the chicest for those who take cabs, cars, anything but the subway. For the rest of us, that pristine blank slate is threatened at every corner. But the majority of designers this season chose to begin their runway show with the sleek, chic basic and we must adapt. If you’re hesitant to wear white from tip to top, pair it with black, extra points if it’s leather.

White:

J. Mendel, Rachel Zoe, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang (L to R).

Phillip Lim, Derek Lam, Prabal Gurung, Peter Som and more went pure for Fall. White is the sleekest of chic, so stay away from frills and stick to tailored pieces. Cropped trousers, belted jackets, and blazers can be tied into any wardrobe. Or go all out a la Proenza with white leather.

As gorgeous as these all white pieces are, I’m extremely clumsy and fear this to be the most dangerous trend of the season. Invest in fabrics that can be dry cleaned easily, or try a light cream or beige. I’m stocking up on Tide to Go pens now.

NYFW Trend Spotting: Leather

20 Feb

Since moving to New York in 2009 this is the first season I have missed fashion week. As fun (and warm) as LA is right now, I’m truly missing the chaos, events, lights, exhaustion, all-consuming greatness that is New York fashion week.

I swooned over Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Oscar de la Renta for absolutely unreachable, over the moon, gorgeous pieces. This week I’ll show you a few of the trends I’ve noticed through catching a live stream here and there….

Leather:

Michael Kors, Alexander Wang, Rodarte, J. Mendel.

Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Proenza Schouler, and Helmut Lang all embraced leather to the highest level for Fall. From head to toe leather will be it. Proenza and Michael Kors put the loose leather trousers as the most covetable item. Leather dresses, sleeves, and jackets will be present as the toned down version, but I plan to go full out. The DKNY collection shows a fun, flirty way to incorporate leather in any look. Vintage leather pieces, or high quality faux-leather for a more affordable version. But be prepared to rock the hardcore look all season long.

Special shout out to these Proenza Schouler boots that stopped my  heart. I will be saving every extra dollar in a fund to purchase these this Fall.

Expect more runway trendspotting once I have a bit more time to spend hours upon hours on Style.com. What are your favorite trends you’ve been seeing so far for Fall?

Style Watch: Florals

16 Feb

Through my desktop inspiration folder I’ve noticed an increase in one style: florals. Not the sweetheart dresses and skirts we normally see each Spring, but a bolder version. Floral, or next level floral peplum tops like Jamie Kings, paired with bold pants is the perfect way to step up your Spring style. Bold pants in wide leg or cropped are a must-have and rather than a basic white or black tee, pair it with a print!

Jamie King in peplum. Blair + Rachel rocking similar floral color scheme with their chosen bright pants. Notice the hot pink flowers in Blair’s top, and Rachel’s red-on-red.

My other ultimate must-have is floral pants. Seen on runways, street style, and now every shop they’re the sweetest style out there. I love the look of a lighter color base like mint or cream, or ultra-bold graphic like the ones below on the left. Floral denim is perfect for weekends + brunch, try cropped cotton like these for a casual-work appropriate look.

Shop the look with Paige Denim, Current/Elliott or for a more neutral, these J.Brand’s.

Love Day

14 Feb

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today is a holiday I will always embrace. I’m an ultimate girlie girl and feel like this holiday was made for me! I love wearing, red + pink, sparkle, the works. But instead of going straight to the heart-print dress, this year it’s more fun to play with themes in a classic way. Go for either red or pink, base with black, and sparkle in gold or silver.

In college, my sorority had an ‘NBA’ dinner- No Boys Allowed. Regardless if you were single, or taken, we spent one night just us girls to celebrate having fun and the love in our life, romantic or not. I suggest sending a special note, calling a friend, or baking something sweet for someone unexpected! Let them know they’re an important person in your life… and you can look cute while doing so.

Click the above link to see the stores my picks are from. Essie’s Fifth Avenue + Maybelline’s Red Revival are my go-to colors year round and are perfect for this holiday. Nine West’s new Love Fury line not only has an amazing scent, but a fierce heel to go with it. Love them!
Happy Love Day!
